Overview
In 1823 the United States was a growing nation, having expirienced much of its growth in the past twenty years. It had grown in several distinct areas:
Geographical:
Geographical:
- Purchased the Lousiana Territory from France in 1803.
- Declared West Florida Part of the Mississippi Territory in 1810.
Political:
- In 1803, the case of Marbury v. Madison determined that the Supreme Court had the right to review all federal laws and decisions and declare whether or not they were constitutional. This ability became known as judicial review.
- The Misouri Comprise of 1820 was an act designed to keep the number of free states and slave states equal. It is one of the ways in which the United States dealt with the issue of slavery.
- The Twelfth Ammendment to the Constitution was passed in response to Election of 1800, changing the way elections took place.
